What is a CSA? It means community supported agriculture. It is a way to support your local farmers grow fresh produce for their community. It is a way to help your farmer get the early-season capital needed to invest in the upcoming growing season. It is also a way to help your farmer buffer his/her risk in growing food in our volatile changing climate. Joining a CSA connects you to your local bioregion, to those who grow your food, and supports local business. By joining our CSA you are supporting a business that cares about the earth, cares about people, and cares about giving back to both of those things.
This year, we will be offering a traditional vegetable box CSA. What does this mean? It means we will be offering memberships to join in a bounty of the farm. Each week for 20 weeks you'll receive a weekly box of produce. Each week the box will look a little different. What you receive will coincide with the time of year and growing season. You might even receive some fruit, mushrooms, and more. For example, the early weeks will be dominated by leafy greens like baby kale and lettuce, microgreens, early-season root crops, and peas. That will give way to beans, broccoli, more root crops of different varieties, greens, and into the summer, tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, onions, carrots, berries, and summer squash. Fall will bring things like winter squash, okra, and more fruits. Towards the end of the season, you will receive many of crops similar to the beginning of the season, in addition to pumpkins and food storage crops. We plan on growing at least 50 varieties of crops. In addition, we will provide you with weekly recipes and creative ideas about how to use your produce, maybe with some food you have never tried before!
In addition to the vegetable CSA boxes, members will be able to add other weekly or biweekly products and goods. You will be able to add on to your weekly order things like eggs, meats, breads, coffee, and kombucha. For example, with a biweekly eggscription you would receive one dozen eggs every other week for 20 weeks, which would equal 10 dozen eggs added at check out below.
You can also preorder pastured chicken as well. We will be raising two groups of pastured chicken that will be available for pickup in early June and early October. You can pre-purchase these alongside or separately from your CSA.
CSA pick-up days are Wednesdays from 2-9pm from June - October. We'll also be offering an optional delivery charge for those who wish to avoid the weekly farm visit. Delivery will be on Wednesdays as well. If you are out of town during one of the weeks of your membership you can designate someone else to pick up your food. If you are interested in delivery, there will be a one-time charge of $95+tax. Our delivery area is within the bounds of I-80, Highway 50, Highway 75, and the Platte River. We will leave the box on your doorstep or a place of your choosing every week during the growing season.
Why choose us? Did you know that we are one of the most diversified small scale farms in Nebraska? We are also "more-ganic"; that means we go beyond organic standards in our treatment and care of our soil, plants, and water. However, not only do we care deeply about the earth, we are cultivating people as well. This year, we are also giving back and you can too! Keipos, a non-profit directly connected with the farm, will be offering a CSA program in central Papillion as well.
Keipos' mission is to use food, farming, and education to transform lives. Keipos will be starting two volunteer and education gardens in Papillion this year, giving the food to families in need and offering classes as well. In addition to signing up for your CSA, please visit the Keipos website and donate produce to families who need it most. Keipos will also be working with the Juvenile Justice Center of Sarpy County for these Papillion volunteer/education garden projects.
